Dialect learning
Learn the dialect. Not the standardized version no one speaks.
LocalLingo is a dialect learning app powered by an AI voice coach. 459 city-specific dialects across 110 languages — because Rio doesn't sound like Lisbon and Osaka doesn't sound like Tokyo.
The textbook trap
Traditional language courses teach a smoothed-over "standard" — the dialect politicians and news anchors use, roughly. Nobody actually talks that way in daily life. Show up in Naples with textbook Italian and you'll understand about a third of what you hear. Show up in Buenos Aires with Castilian Spanish and people will politely correct every sentence.
What dialect learning gives you
- Comprehension of real speech. Slang, contractions, connected speech — the stuff textbooks strip out.
- Cultural fit. Speaking someone's dialect is the fastest signal that you took the time to actually learn their language.
- Faster progress. Motivation compounds when what you learn maps 1:1 to what you hear on the street.
How LocalLingo teaches dialects
Each city on LocalLingo has its own coach profile: local vocabulary, phonetic overrides, grammar habits, and cultural context. When you start a session in Buenos Aires, the AI uses vos instead of tú, pronounces "ll" as /ʃ/, drops the correct syllables, and drops in real Argentine slang. When you switch to Mexico City the profile swaps entirely.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a dialect and a language?
A language is the umbrella. A dialect is the version of that language actually spoken by a specific community — with its own vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar habits. 'Spanish' is a language; Rioplatense (Buenos Aires) and Chilango (Mexico City) are dialects. Learning the dialect is what makes you sound local instead of foreign.
Why should I learn a dialect instead of the standard version?
Because standards are compromises no one actually speaks. If you're moving to Marseille, generic Parisian French will still mark you as an outsider. If you're doing business in São Paulo, Continental Portuguese will confuse people. Dialects are how humans actually communicate.
How does a dialect learning app work?
LocalLingo loads a city-specific prompt profile — vocabulary, phonetic habits, slang, grammar quirks — into the AI voice coach. When you speak, the coach responds in that exact dialect, so every session is immersion in the version of the language you actually need.
Which dialects are available?
459 city-specific dialects across 110 languages. Highlights: Rioplatense, Andean, Chilean, Chilango, Caribbean Spanish; Carioca, Paulistano, Continental Portuguese; Parisian, Quebecois, Marseillais, Belgian French; Kansai-ben, Tokyo, Osaka, Hakata Japanese; and hundreds more.
Can I switch dialects mid-subscription?
Yes. Your subscription unlocks every city. You can spend Monday in Buenos Aires, Tuesday in Osaka, and Wednesday in Marseille without any extra charge.
